Introduction

• This is always one of my favorite days each year.
• I have has the chance to be in India twice on Independence Day
• One was traditional wear we went by the Red Fort and flew kites.
• Another was with an older gentleman who spent time in America and we ate fried okra & listened to Willie Nelson
• I know tonight hasn’t been full of all the traditions that you might have grown up with but I hope we are at least someone between the two days that I mentioned
• I would like to share with you one verse and an explanation of that verse.
• This is my primary responsibility at this church. I teach from the Bible. We go from chapter to chapter and book to book.

Context is very important in all reading.

• This verse summarizes chapter 4, where the theme is bondage and freedom.
• Paul declared that Christ was the great Liberator who set believers free from bondage.
• Audience: Christians, followers of Christ, that had come to be Christian even though they had been raised Jewish.
• Occasion: False teachers had come into the church and wanted people to believe that their salvation would come from following a list of rules.

Galatians 5:1 “1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

Ask 3 questions. (Something we teach our kids as we learn the Bible.)

• What?
• So, what?
• Now what?

What?

Galatians 5:1 “1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.”

• Believers’ sins are forgiven on the basis of Christ’s perfect sacrifice.
• Now believers can live in freedom from the law, and they can live in freedom from the consequences and power of sin.
• The law’s purpose was to reveal our sinfulness (Romans 3:20) and to bring us to Christ (Galatians 3:24).

So, what?

• Jesus came to earth and lived a life fulfilling all of the law in our place.
• Jesus died on the cross as a law breaker. He was not the law breaker we are.
• Now we have true freedom from the guilt, shame, and eternal punishment for that sin.

Now what?

• We live everyday rejoicing in our freedom.
• We share this good news with others.
• We celebrate the fact that we have gained independence from the worst and heaviest of all oppressions. Sin.
