Opening — Missions Story

Haystack was the grandfather of Mount Hermon.

In 1806, college students prayed about the world and helped launch the great American missionary movement. That movement sent Robert Wilder's father to India. Robert was born in India because of that missionary generation. Then Robert returned to America and, at another student gathering in Massachusetts in 1886, helped ignite another enormous student missionary movement.

1886, Mount Hermon: D. L. Moody gathers 251 students for a month of Bible study and prayer.
Robert Wilder carries a burden for missions; a small group begins praying daily.
Their confidence wasn't in strategy or resources — it was in Christ's own words:

Matthew 28:18–20

All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Result: 100 students volunteer — the “Mount Hermon Hundred” — seed of the Student Volunteer Movement.

Sermon Introduction

Hold your Bible up. Ask: what are we primarily here to learn?

Not mainly rules or history — Scripture is the record of who God is.
Every law, judgment, promise, and story reveals His character.
The question for every chapter: not just what happened — what does this show about God?
Genesis 8: 22 verses about who God is to a man who could only wait on Him.

We'll learn four things about God from watching Noah wait:

God was faithful before you could see it.
God moves slow because He's after complete, not quick.
God doesn't want your "not yet" mistaken for "never."
God's word outweighs our evaluation of the circumstances.

The Text

Genesis 8:1–19

Today, we learn about waiting. We learn about hope.

The Story

Not the nursery-mural ark — a sealed, dark vessel the length of a football field and a half. Giraffe out the window. Two male lions.
Noah has no information: can't see the sky, can't check the ground. He listens, tends the animals, waits.

Noah's thoughts were probably less about the circumstances around him than about one question: can God be trusted when we live life in the dark and the unknown?

Chapter 8: the wind moves, the water starts to drop. He sends a raven — restless, unhelpful.
He sends a dove. She finds nothing. He reaches out and pulls her back in.
Seven days later: she returns with a torn olive leaf. Proof.
Seven more days: she doesn't return — she's found a branch of her own.
Verse 13: the ground is visibly dry. And still Noah does not open the door.

That is where we're going to spend our morning — not just what Noah learned while the water rose and fell, but what it cost him to keep waiting even after he already knew the answer.

You are not the only one in this room living in the space between the promise and the proof.

1. God was faithful before you could see it.

Genesis 8:1

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

Three things the word remembered is doing here:

His faithfulness didn't start when yours noticed it.
Remembered = deliberate action, not memory returning from absence.
Covenant made in Genesis 6:18, before a board was cut.
He never overlooks what you're carrying.
“Every living thing, and all the cattle” — an inventory, not decoration.
Not selective triage — God remembers completely.
What changed was your sight. Not His commitment.
Not God waking up — His covenant arriving on time.
Circumstances changing isn't when God started caring — only when it became visible.

There's a second passage worth setting beside this one, it makes the same point from the other direction:

Genesis 6:5–6

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

That language describes God's real grief over sin in terms we can understand, it does not mean His plans wavered the way ours do. Genesis 8:1 is the same kind of statement pointed the other way: not God's memory returning, but God's settled commitment described in language we can understand. Both verses tell you God feels the full weight of what's happening in real time. Neither one tells you His covenant with Noah ever wavered.

The moment your circumstances finally change is not the moment God started caring about you.

2. God moves slow because He's after complete, not quick.

Genesis 8:2–5

The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; and the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

Three reasons the slowness is by design:

He calms things gradually, not all at once.
Asswaged = to subside, to calm — not sudden rupture.
“Returned…continually” — day after day, 150 days.
He finishes what He starts.
“Rested” = same word as God's Sabbath rest (Gen. 2:3).
Rest = completion, not absence of activity.
Looking better isn't the same as being done.
Ark rests month 7; mountaintops visible month 10 — 3 more months.
God works toward completion, not just appearance of finished.

ILLUSTRATION As a teenager, I was in the hospital after surgery, wanting to be sewn up and sent home. Instead I stayed thirty days — no food, no water — because my body needed to actually heal before it could be closed. Closing me too soon wouldn't have meant I was healed. It would have just meant I looked finished while something underneath was still wrong. God is not stitching your circumstances shut quickly so the situation merely looks resolved; He is rebuilding the ground itself, underneath, on a timetable slow enough that it will actually bear weight later.

Looking better isn't the same as being done.

He does not rush toward the appearance of resolution. He works toward completion of it.

3. God doesn't want your "not yet" mistaken for "never."

Genesis 8:6–9

And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made: and he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; but the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.*

Three moments of testing:

Not every question you ask Him is actually a good question.
Raven sent first — restless, scavenging, needs no solid ground.
Gives Noah no real information — some of our questions are like that. (Noah’s wife - so what did we learn?)
An honest “not yet” isn't a “no.”
Doves need clean, solid ground — “no rest for the sole of her foot.”
Not a verdict on the promise — an accurate report on the ground.
God receives your questions without punishing you.
“Put forth his hand…pulled her in.” No punishment.
You're permitted to send the dove out.

BACKGROUND — Ravens were unclean, doves were clean. Israel already knew this from the law (Leviticus 11:15; 1:14). So when Noah sends the raven first, then the dove, the first hearers weren't just tracking two birds — they heard unclean sent out before clean. Spurgeon preached the same contrast: the raven was content feasting on the dead things floating by; the dove couldn't rest there — her nature wouldn't allow it. It wasn't the flood that sent her back to Noah. It was her nature.

A raven can rest anywhere there's something to feed on. A dove won't rest until it's clean ground — or Noah's own hand.

The application: while you wait, watch what you're letting yourself rest on. A raven-nature will settle for whatever's available, even if it's dead. A dove-nature keeps refusing to settle, and keeps coming back to God, until He Himself gives what's real.

4. God's word outweighs our evaluation of the circumstances.

Genesis 8:11

And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; and the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

Three details most we often rush past:

Even good news comes on His timing, not yours.
“Stayed yet other seven days” — a full cycle again.
Patience isn't a stage you graduate out of.
What He gives you is real. Not decoration.
Pluckt = torn from a living branch — first olive tree in Scripture.
“So Noah knew” — intimate experiential knowledge, the same word used of God “knowing” His people and of a husband “knowing” his wife:
You can know before the waiting is over.
Leaf in v.11, dove gone in v.12, ground dry in v.13 — yet Noah waits.
Evidence vs. permission — God is generous with the first, reserves the second.

Genesis 8:15

And God spake unto Noah, saying, Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee.

ILLUSTRATION Sent a message to my aunt. Yesterday would have been the 57th birthday of her daughter Talana. She had a good name. The day of her birth was good. The day of her deliverance from this world was better. We only feel two of those things are true - but we have God’s Word telling us all three are.

Knowing what has happened and being released from where you've been placed are two different mercies, granted at two different times.

Good News

We can know we have salvation

Genesis 8:11 — "And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.”

One of the core tenants of Christianity is we hold onto a promise that lets us speak in language of knowing we have been saved. Saved from the penalty of sin, saved from the power of sin, and someday saved from the presence of sin.

We hold on tightly, not to a olive branch, but the truth of the resurrection.

Luke 24:39

Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

John says the same thing about the same kind of proof:

1 John 1:1

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

That is good news — like Noah, we can know as well. We hold onto the resurrection as the tangible, historical act that tells us we are safe and that God has kept His promises.

That leaves us exactly where Noah stood between verse 11 and verse 15: holding something real the resurrection. We have the branch.

Closing

PROMISES WE CAN CLAIM

A promise of God is something He said — not something we want, inferred, or were told secondhand. If you can't point to where He said it, hold it loosely.

Cannot claim: I will be wealthy. Can claim: I can be content in any situation. Philippians 4:11
Cannot claim: I will be healed on my timeline, or spared this suffering. Can claim: His grace is enough to carry me through it. 2 Corinthians 12:9
Cannot claim: I will understand why this happened. Can claim: it is not wasted, even unexplained. Romans 8:28
Cannot claim: this trial ends on my schedule. Can claim: He will finish what He started in me. Philippians 1:6

Cannot claim: I'll never face hard times again. Can claim: God has bound Himself to never again destroy the earth by flood.

Genesis 9:16

“And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth.”

The rainbow isn't proof nothing bad will happen to you. It's proof God keeps costly promises for thousands of years without wavering. That's what makes Him trustworthy with the smaller floods in your own life right now.

Even when it's raining, and the dove comes back with nothing, I can know deliverance is coming not because of what I see, but because of who promised it.

Lamentations 3:25–26

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
