Text: Luke 24:44–47; Hebrews 1:1–2

BIG IDEA

The entire Bible is one unified story written by one Author, moving through all of history, arriving at one Hero: Jesus Christ, and that story was always intended for the whole world.

INTRODUCTION

A man once asked why David killed Goliath. Most people think they know the answer. But the text does not emphasize bravery. It emphasizes that an uncircumcised Philistine was defying the armies of the living God.

That question exposes a bigger issue. Many people read the Bible for details but miss the story.

The Bible is both a collection of books and one unified book. Sixty six books. Forty authors. Fifteen hundred years. Yet one unbroken story, one consistent message, one Author, one mission.

44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: 47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

I. God Has Been Speaking Across All of History

A. Progressive Revelation

God has spoken in many portions and many ways. His revelation unfolded over time in stages.

Genesis introduces the beginning The Law establishes structure The Prophets bring clarity The Gospels reveal fulfillment

Each stage is true but incomplete on its own. The Old Testament is not inferior. It is preparatory. The New Testament does not contradict it. It completes it.

B. One Author Behind Scripture

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

C. Major Threads Through Scripture

Each begins in the Old Testament and finds fulfillment in Christ.

God has been speaking across history.
His message has always been one coherent revelation moving toward fulfillment.

II. Every Part of Scripture Points Somewhere

A. The Whole Canon Points to Christ

Jesus claims the entire Old Testament points to Him.
Not isolated verses. The whole story.

B. Scripture Must Be Interpreted Fully

27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Jesus showed how to read Scripture properly.
He interpreted the Bible as one unified message centered on Himself.

C. The Mission of God Through Scripture

1. Creation

Genesis 1:28 God’s image bearers fill the earth

2. The Fall and First Promise

Genesis 3:15 The first promise of redemption given to all humanity

3. Abrahamic Covenant

Genesis 12:1–3 "In thee shall all families of the earth be blessed."

God chose Abraham for the nations, not instead of them.

4. Israel’s Role

Exodus 19:5–6 A kingdom of priests mediating God to the nations

5. The Psalms

Psalm 67:1–2 God blesses His people so the nations will know Him

6. The Prophets

Isaiah 49:6 Salvation extends to the ends of the earth

D. The Unified Story

Creation → Fall → Redemption → Restoration

This story has always been global in scope.

E. The Apostles Read Scripture This Way

They consistently interpret the Old Testament as pointing forward to Christ.

F. Clarification

Christ-centered reading does not ignore original meaning. It fulfills it.

III. That Somewhere Is Always Jesus

Everything before prepared for this moment.

He was never absent. He was always the destination.

Serpent, manna, rock, lamb

All point forward to Christ and are fulfilled in Him.

D. The Mission Fulfilled

Luke 24:46–47 Christ suffered, rose, and sent the message to all nations

Acts 1:8 Witnesses to the ends of the earth

The mission given to Abraham is fulfilled through Christ and His church.

E. Warning

It is possible to know Scripture and miss Christ. It is possible to understand theology and ignore mission.

32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

CONCLUSION

The Bible is one story. God created the world. Man fell. God promised redemption. He worked through one people to bring one Savior. That Savior died, rose, and sent His people to the nations.

Genesis 12:3 is still being fulfilled. Revelation 7:9 is the destination.

The goal is not more information. The goal is a heart awakened by the truth of Scripture.

When Scripture is rightly understood, it leads to Christ. And when Christ is seen clearly, it moves us outward.
