Big Idea

“There is someone in this story who understood something about Jesus that nobody else in the room did. She never said a word.”

Opening Scripture Reading

13 Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her.

Is the gospel preached here?

Then the story must be told.

And today there are stories in this room that must be told too.

Introduction

Six days before Passover, during the most important week in history, Jesus reclines at the table.

In the first century meal posture, guests reclined on low couches around a low table with their feet extended away from the food. That detail matters because His feet are already accessible, already pointing toward her.

Martha is serving. Lazarus is at the table. It is a quiet evening among friends.

Then someone stops the room.

Key Truth

The world measures everything by what it produces. We calculate. We evaluate return. What happens when love refuses to do that math?

1. She Gave What Could Not Be Replaced

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.

Story of the Ointment

A. “Then took Mary” — She acted with full intention

“Took” implies deliberate action.
She moved toward it.
Love had nowhere left to go but out.

B. “Spikenard, very costly” — She gave the irreplaceable thing

Pure. Unadulterated.
One pound. John records the weight because it mattered.
A year’s wages, and she broke the seal anyway.

C. “Anointed the feet… wiped with her hair” — She spent her dignity along with her treasure

Jesus is reclining with His feet already extended into the room.
Head anointing belonged to kings. She went to the floor.
Unbound hair carried social cost in that culture.
She gave the jar, then gave herself with it.

This act declared:

“I will go as low as love requires.”

D. “The house was filled with the odour” — Extravagant love changes every room it enters

Not just His corner. The whole house.
Some things fill a room and you do not know the source until you stop.
Love poured out completely always fills more than the immediate space around it.

E. The Silence of Mary

Mary never speaks in any Gospel account.
She never explains.
Never defends.
Never asks for credit.
The perfume was her sermon. She preached with the alabaster box.
An act so complete it required no words.

2. The World Always Has a Better Idea

4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.

A. “Then saith Judas Iscariot” — John names him before quoting him

“Which should betray him” is intentional.
Read his logic knowing where it led.
The man committed to redirecting love from Jesus would soon sell Him for thirty pieces of silver.

B. “Three hundred pence” — He already ran the numbers

He did not guess.
He knew the exact price.
The thief knew down to the penny what she surrendered.

C. “Given to the poor” — The criticism wrapped itself in righteousness

Sounded responsible.
Sounded wise.
Sounded moral.
That is what made it dangerous.
The world’s most reasonable arguments against devotion almost always protect something other than what they claim.

D. “Not that he cared for the poor” — John pulls back the curtain

He objected to losing control, not to the waste.
A thief steals more than money. He steals meaning.
He could not tolerate what he could not profit from.

E. She was criticized every time she appeared

Luke 10 — Martha criticized her for sitting instead of serving.

John 12 — Judas criticized her for wasting.

Every scene involving Mary ends with someone telling her she got it wrong.
Extravagant devotion to Jesus always attracts criticism from people who appear to have a point.
If nobody has ever told you your devotion to Christ is excessive, examine whether it actually is.

Illustration

Judas is not a cartoon villain.

He is practical. Responsible. Organized around what things are worth.
Most people in this room are Judas in that sense. Trained since childhood to ask whether something is worth it.
That is wisdom until it meets Jesus.
Then it becomes the most dangerous posture in the world.

The criticism of extravagant love almost always sounds reasonable. That is what makes it dangerous.

3. Jesus Defends What the World Dismisses

7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

A. “Let her alone” — Jesus shut it down before she said a word

He did not ask her to explain herself.
He did not open the floor for discussion.
Two words. Case closed.
She did not need to speak because the right person spoke for her.

B. “Against the day of my burying” — This is where the gospel opens up

Six days from now there will be a cross.
He knew what was coming, and He went anyway.
Mary had been sitting at His feet long enough to hear what others refused to understand.
The disciples heard His death predictions and missed them.
Mary may have understood what they dismissed.
Or perhaps she understood nothing fully, but love moved her to do the right thing before her mind caught up.

What does someone have to believe to do what Mary did?

She is not pouring out to get something.
She already received something nobody could take away.
She knows she is loved. She knows she belongs.
She gives like a daughter of the house, not a servant earning a seat.
Slaves give to earn. Children give because they already belong.

C. This was an act of courage, not just love — Spurgeon

This happened publicly.
Religious leaders were already plotting to kill Jesus.
To anoint Him openly was to take a side when taking sides carried a cost.
Mary was not merely worshipping. She was identifying herself with Him.

D. “Me ye have not always” — He declared this moment irreplaceable

Some moments do not come twice.
Mary recognized this one.
Judas missed it.
The difference was not personality. It was what each believed about Jesus.

E. What she poured out could never be recovered — Spurgeon

Once the seal broke, the perfume could not be gathered back.
True sacrifice cannot be reclaimed or hedged.
She broke it, and when it was broken it was all His.

F. Jesus doesn’t want us to miss what others despise

“Be told for a memorial of her.”

She never defended herself because she never had to.
Jesus does not forget what is poured out for Him.
Nothing given to Christ is ever truly lost.

Key Truth

You do not always get credit for what you pour out.
The world may call it foolish.
But Jesus sees it. Names it. Honors it.

The Gospel

Mary poured out perfume.

Six days later Jesus poured out Himself.

He did not merely receive sacrifice. He became the sacrifice.

He did not calculate. Did not redirect. He broke the seal and poured it all out.

The reason any love like this exists is because there is a God who loved first.

Gave first.
Went lowest first.
You do not work your way up to this love.
You receive it.

The perfume filled the house because the seal broke.

The gospel fills a life the same way.
If you have never let that happen, today is the day.

Conclusion

Preached this whole sermon and never mentioned mothers.

But many people have been thinking about one the entire time.

A face. A name. A memory.

Reapplication

Point 1 — She gave what could not be replaced

A mother pours herself out day after day.
Time she cannot recover.
Energy she cannot renew.
Some things fill a room and you do not know the source until you stop.

Question

What did she pour out for you that she can never get back?

She never asked you to notice.

Point 2 — The world always has a better idea

Someone in her life ran the numbers too.

Ambition redirected.

The world told her she was wasting herself.

The criticism always sounded reasonable.

Martha had a point. Judas had a point.

They were all looking at the wrong thing.

Question

Who told her she was wasting herself, and did you ever push back?

Sometimes Judas is not a stranger. Sometimes he is the voice we never corrected.

Point 3 — Jesus defends what the world dismisses

Every mother who quietly poured herself out without explanation or recognition:

Jesus sees it.
Jesus saw Mary.
Jesus named it.
Jesus made the world remember her.

He will not forget what your mother gave either.

Question

Have you ever looked her in the eye and said:

“I see what it cost you.”

She has never asked you to say it.

That is exactly why you should.

Final Application

Maybe she is here today. Tell her.

Maybe she is gone. Carry it like it matters because it does.

Maybe you are a mother and you are tired and wondering if it matters.

Maybe you have never truly said thank you.

Maybe you always wanted to be a mother and it never happened.

This room sees you.

And so does Jesus.

Closing Statement

The lie most people believe is that a small life is a wasted life.

Picking up the same toys.
Driving the same carpool.
Making the same lunches.
Answering the same questions.

Judas would agree.

Spreadsheet ready. Hours counted. Certain you could have done more.

But Judas never understood this:

Mary was not on the floor because her life was small.

She was on the floor because she knew Jesus who was in the room.
